GOLD TO PROTECT WEALTH?
If we talk about wealth the first thing that comes in our mind is MONEY. Of course you are right but do you know that money value depreciate over time? Meaning, 1 ringgit today is not 1 ringgit in the near future. Why? Well, as a layperson in investment/economy, what i understand is value of money changes with goods & services supply & demand status. The changes in general price of these goods & services contribute to inflation. Inflation is what causes our money value to depreciate. The higher the inflation rate the faster the money value drop over time. The indicator used to monitor inflation in our country is consumer price index (CPI). Our current inflation rate is about 3% to 4% (will change with our country economic status).
To simplify, RM 2.00 that we have today can buy you a plate of nasi lemak but a year later the same nasi lemak will cost you RM2.10 (rounded) or more. So, how are we going to STOP our losses/leak?
More than 1000 years ago people choose gold as currency because of the intrinsic value and uses of this precious metal. Gold is a symbol of wealth and in some society it is even regarded as sacred. Even during world war II, our ancestors used gold instead of paper currency to keep their wealth. The main reason for this was that paper currency changes with the ruling government (British, Japan, British). Our ancestors worked hard to get paid. Some of them kept their money under their pillow or even buried it. What they noticed was that once japan ruled the country, british currency is no longer accepted. All their hard earned paper money is now worthless.
Same goes during the japan then back to british colonization. All of their life savings became plain old paper. The only thing they can use throughout the colonizations as currency was gold.
What we can learn from this is do not keep all our wealth in the form of money. Diversify. Real estates, stocks & bonds and of course gold. Professional investors suggest that we keep gold at least 10-25% of our total investments. For some of us (including me) who cannot afford real estates or have scanty knowledge about stocks or bonds, gold offer a good way to start your investment. It is affordable and thanks to Public Gold, investment gold is easily and readily available.
So, please please do not disregard gold as an important tool to protect your wealth.

Tribute to SHISHA (My Beloved Cat) : Jan 2012 to 31 October 2016 |
Gold saving and gold investment is actually quite different. For those interested to invest in gold should have at least 100g of gold bar. This is because the heavier the gold bar the smaller the spread (5-8%). If any of us interested to invest in gold should set a personal target. Become a buyer first and once our personal target reached then we can start the investment.
When we talk about spot gold price we know that the price fluctuate every minute as investors did the bidding. But, can we anticipate the trend of the gold whether up or down? When to buy or sell? Trend or chart pattern reading needs a special set of skills. The skills require us to learn about technical analysis of gold (or other commodities) chart.
Candlesticks Chart |
When gold investors discuss about the market trend they do not simply say going up or down but instead they would say 'bullish' or 'bearish' trend. This technical terms are widely used in investment world. So, if we wish to be part of their world we need to learn their 'language'.
OHLC Chart |
I am not suggesting that we take investment as our major but at least know the basics such as type of charts - OHLC, candlesticks or line.
Chart: Gold market trend candlestick chart analyzed using Bollinger bands and MACD
- Bollinger bands to showing the volatility of the market
- MACD to show the momentum & trend of market
After understanding the gold chart, we now can see the market trend. To get more information, we need to analyze the chart. Tools designed by the experts comprises of complex formula which was simplified into user-friendly applications such as Fibonacci retracement, Bollinger bands, relative strength index or moving average. What is expected from us as end-users are only to choose the appropriate application(s) and interpret the results.
To summarize, if we intend to become gold investor we need to arm ourselves with adequate technical analysis knowledge to avoid losing instead of gaining profit from this potential investment.

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCED GOLD PRICE
1. Value of U.S. dollar
U.S. dollar is the main currency involved in international trades. Dollar strength and gold price have inverse relationship. If the dollar is strong, the price of gold will decrease as more people tend to invest and trade in dollar.
2. Central Bank Reserves
Federal Reserve Bank of New York |
Central banks hold paper currency and gold in reserve. Any factors that result in instability to central banks will cause people to buy more gold rather than keeping paper currency.
3. Monetary Policy
4. Supply and Demand
a. Supply
- Mining produce 60% of gold in the market annually
- Recycled gold
- Central banks and international organizations gold transactions
Gold Mine |
- Jewellery – majority of demand is in this sector
- Manufacturing – as gold is a efficient electrical conductor, it is used in solid state devices such as cell phones
- Investments – gold has negative correlation to stocks & bonds. This renders gold as a good wealth protector and usually placed as part of portfolios.

5. Inflation
Inflation is an increase in general price of goods and services. As inflation increases gold prices also increase. People believe that gold can protect their wealth and so more and more people will exchange their paper currency into gold.6. Crude Oil Price

7. Exchange Rate

KELEBIHAN MENYIMPAN EMAS
1. Dapat kekalkan nilai
2. Membantu menabung
3. Menjaga kekayaan kita

AR-RAHNU EMAS (PAJAK GADAI)
1. Nilai Marhun iaitu nilai emas semasa (bergantung
dengan tempat pajak)
2. Kadar upah simpan
3. Jumlah pajakan:
Bank Rakyat membenarkan jumlah pajakan RM 10,000 sehari dan RM 50,000 jumlah terkumpul, maksimum 300g emas
Margin pinjaman maksima sehingga 70% (bagi pelanggan baru ~ 65%)
4. Tempoh gadaian (sehingga 6 bulan, tempoh maksima
lanjutan 18 bulan dari tarikh gadaian)
Formula upah simpan Ar-Rahnu:
Upah Simpan = Nilai Marhun x Kadar Upah Simpan x 12 x Tempoh (hari)
100 365
Contoh:
- Nilai marhun (nilai emas) : RM5000 (mengikut bank)
- Jumlah pinjaman : RM3500 (70%)
- Tempoh : 180 hari (6 bulan)
- Kadar upah simpan (ditetapkan oleh bank) : RM 0.85
Penggiraan:
Upah simpan = 5000 x 0.85/100 x12 x 180/365
= 5000 x 0.0085 x 12 x 0.49
= RM249.90
Jumlah tebus semula emas = RM3500 + RM249.90
= RM3749.90 (NB: TIADA CAJ & FI TAMBAHAN)
