WORLD GOLD COUNCIL RECOMMENDATION

Gold has unique properties as an asset class. Modest allocations to gold of 2 per cent to 10 per cent can protect and enhance the performance of an investment portfolio.* A 5 per cent to 6 per cent allocation is optimal for investors with a well-balanced 60/40 portfolio.*
Retail buyers are embracing gold’s investment properties. Even so, gold still only makes up less than one per cent of investors’ asset allocations.
Investors of all levels of experience are attracted to gold as a solid, tangible and long-term store of value that historically has moved independently of other assets.* Our analysis shows that gold can be used in portfolios to protect global purchasing power, reduce portfolio volatility and minimise losses during periods of market shock. It can serve as a high-quality, liquid asset to be used when selling other assets would cause losses. National central banks, tewards of the world’s largest long-term investment portfolios, use gold to mitigate portfolio risk in this way, and have been net buyers of gold since 2010.

Gold has also become more readily accessible, due to the development of a range of products, which investors and advisors can include in their own and their clients’ portfolios. The diversity of gold-backed and gold-related products means that gold can be used to enhance a wider variety of individual investment strategies and risk tolerances.
Investors also make use of gold’s lack of correlation with other assets to diversify their portfolios and hedge against currency risk.
The World Gold Council is the global authority on gold and gold markets, and produces high-quality research on what drives the gold market, and the merits of investing in gold.

WAYS TO USE GOLD

Gold can be used as saving tool and because its value is preserved over time compared to paper currency, we can rest assured our savings will be safe. "Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail".
In order to succeed in saving using gold or any type of saving, discipline is all-important and without discipline success is very unlikely.
Divide our needs or wants into different category like what i did and "assign" gold to that particular areas. A bit here and there. Prioritize. Different people have different priority. Try small to build your confidence such as vacation trip. Find out the budget for your vacation. Put some gold into your vacation basket and once your target achieved, sell-off or pawn the gold to pay for your vacation. Believe it, using gold as saving is much easier than money.

HAVE FUN TRYING!!

ELEMENT 79 (AURUM) – GOLD

There is a Malay proverb "Sikit-sikit lama-lama jadi bukit" which literally means if we work on something diligently and with patience we will achieve our objective. In the context of wealth, consistent is the key.

~*~                                                                        ~*~

One way to start is gold investment/saving by buying a small amount of gold via Public Gold GAP account, with discipline of course.  Every opportunity (extra money) we buy a gram of gold.  Let just say we buy a gram per month,  in one year we will have 12g of gold.  We can set our own personal target. Once achieved, we withdraw the gold from our GAP account and keep the 999.9 or 24k gold ourselves.  This is similar to keeping money in our saving account but remember money value can depreciate due to multiple factors such as inflation and exchange rate.

~*~                                                                                                                   ~*~

Apart from its rarity, gold value comes from its natural characteristics.  Gold is dense, malleable, ductile, highly efficient electric conductor, chemically inert and corrosion resistant.  As a result, gold has multiple uses in fields like medicine (gold-based drugs for rheumatoid arthritis), electronics and aerospace.  Due to this, we do not have to worry about gold losing its intrinsic value but we do need some investment knowledge of gold to protect and also expand our wealth.

~*~                                                                                                                   ~*~

Public gold presented us with opportunities by providing aforementioned GAP account, affordable gold bar/coin purchase with very good buy-back spread of 5-8% compared to other financial institution.  Not to advertise about public gold but to sincerely share what I have learned from gold accumulation/saving in public gold family.

CARA MEMBUKA AKAUN GAP

GOLD TO PROTECT WEALTH?

If we talk about wealth the first thing that comes in our mind is MONEY. Of course you are right but do you know that money value depreciate over time? Meaning, 1 ringgit today is not 1 ringgit in the near future. Why? Well, as a layperson in investment/economy, what i understand is value of money changes with goods & services supply & demand status. The changes in general price of these goods & services contribute to inflation. Inflation is what causes our money value to depreciate. The higher the inflation rate the faster the money value drop over time. The indicator used to monitor inflation in our country is consumer price index (CPI). Our current inflation rate is about 3% to 4% (will change with our country economic status).

To simplify, RM 2.00 that we have today can buy you a plate of nasi lemak but a year later the same nasi lemak will cost you RM2.10 (rounded) or more. So, how are we going to STOP our losses/leak?

More than 1000 years ago people choose gold as currency because of the intrinsic value and uses of this precious metal. Gold is a symbol of wealth and in some society it is even regarded as sacred. Even during world war II, our ancestors used gold instead of paper currency to keep their wealth. The main reason for this was that paper currency changes with the ruling government (British, Japan, British). Our ancestors worked hard to get paid. Some of them kept their money under their pillow or even buried it. What they noticed was that once japan ruled the country, british currency is no longer accepted. All their hard earned paper money is now worthless.

Same goes during the japan then back to british colonization. All of their life savings became plain old paper. The only thing they can use throughout the colonizations as currency was gold.

What we can learn from this is do not keep all our wealth in the form of money. Diversify. Real estates, stocks & bonds and of course gold. Professional investors suggest that we keep gold at least 10-25% of our total investments. For some of us (including me) who cannot afford real estates or have scanty knowledge about stocks or bonds, gold offer a good way to start your investment. It is affordable and thanks to Public Gold, investment gold is easily and readily available.

So, please please do not disregard gold as an important tool to protect your wealth.

Tribute to SHISHA (My Beloved Cat) : Jan 2012 to 31 October 2016

IMPORTANCE OF TECHNICAL ANALYSIS IN GOLD INVESTMENT

Gold saving and gold investment is actually quite different. For those interested to invest in gold should have at least 100g of gold bar. This is because the heavier the gold bar the smaller the spread (5-8%). If any of us interested to invest in gold should set a personal target. Become a buyer first and once our personal target reached then we can start the investment.

When we talk about spot gold price we know that the price fluctuate every minute as investors did the bidding. But, can we anticipate the trend of the gold whether up or down? When to buy or sell? Trend or chart pattern reading needs a special set of skills. The skills require us to learn about technical analysis of gold (or other commodities) chart.

Candlesticks Chart

When gold investors discuss about the market trend they do not simply say going up or down but instead they would say 'bullish' or 'bearish' trend. This technical terms are widely used in investment world. So, if we wish to be part of their world we need to learn their 'language'.

OHLC Chart

I am not suggesting that we take investment as our major but at least know the basics such as type of charts - OHLC, candlesticks or line.

Chart: Gold market trend candlestick chart analyzed using Bollinger bands and MACD
  •  Bollinger bands to showing the volatility of the market
  •  MACD to show the momentum & trend of market

After understanding the gold chart, we now can see the market trend.  To get more information, we need to analyze the chart. Tools designed by the experts comprises of complex formula which was simplified into user-friendly applications such as Fibonacci retracement, Bollinger bands, relative strength index or moving average. What is expected from us as end-users are only to choose the appropriate application(s) and interpret the results.

To summarize, if we intend to become gold investor we need to arm ourselves with adequate technical analysis knowledge to avoid losing instead of gaining profit from this potential investment.

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCED GOLD PRICE

1.   Value of U.S. dollar

U.S. dollar is the main currency involved in international trades. Dollar strength and gold price have inverse relationship. If the dollar is strong, the price of gold will decrease as more people tend to invest and trade in dollar.

2.   Central Bank Reserves

Federal Reserve Bank of New York
Central banks hold paper currency and gold in reserve. Any factors that result in instability to central banks will cause people to buy more gold rather than keeping paper currency.

3.   Monetary Policy

Interest rates (controlled by Federal Reserve) influenced the price of gold. Decrease in interest rates would entice people to flock to gold as bonds and stocks offer nominal gain and vice versa.

4.   Supply and Demand

       a. Supply
  • Mining produce 60% of gold in the market annually
  • Recycled gold
  • Gold Mine
  • Central banks and international organizations gold transactions

       b. Demand

  • Jewellery – majority of demand is in this sector
  • Manufacturing – as gold is a efficient electrical conductor, it is used in solid state devices such as cell phones
  • Electronic Circuit containing Gold
  • Investments – gold has negative correlation to stocks & bonds. This renders gold as a good wealth protector and usually placed as part of portfolios.

5.   Inflation

Inflation is an increase in general price of goods and services. As inflation increases gold prices also increase. People believe that gold can protect their wealth and so more and more people will exchange their paper currency into gold.

6.   Crude Oil Price

BLUE=GOLD, ORANGE=CRUDE OIL
Like gold, price of crude oil is determined in U.S. dollar. As crude oil price increase, gold mining cost also increases which will hike the gold price.

7.   Exchange Rate

GOLD PRICE (YELLOW) & EXCHANGE RATE (USD/MYR) 10-YEAR PERIOD  OVERLAPPED
SHOWING INCREASE GOLD PRICE TREND
As gold is dollar-denominated asset, exchange rate plays an important role in determining the gold price for investors of other currencies such as Malaysia. As Malaysian Ringgit depreciates relative to the US Dollar (ie. increase in exchange rates) the gold price will be amplified
 .

8.   Political Stability

If the government or financial markets were in the state of uncertain stability, people would tend to invest more in gold as they lack confidence and also anticipation of nominal profit gain.
